Special-Ed Busing Still a Problem By Yoav Gonen
"September 25, 2007 -- Action by the Education Department to solve busing delays for special-ed students has been, well, delayed, Comptroller William Thompson said yesterday.
In a letter to Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, Thompson referenced the busing woes of two families detailed in yesterday's Post in asking why the DOE failed to address concerns he had raised last year.
'It was . . . with particular frustration that I read today's article in the New York Post noting DOE's continued failure to properly administer its resources and, in particular, its continued failure to transport children to their schools in a timely manner,' he wrote.
Last October, Thompson told Klein that special-education students were enduring long rides or late buses. A month later, Klein said it would be fixed.
DOE spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said the problems were due to students added to existing routes."

Special-Ed buses are still
running late. My daughter's bus
has never been on time once this year. School starts at 8:30 and yet
the DOE has her picked up usually
near or after 8am every day . She has a long ride to Long Island with a bus of ten kids. She is the last to reach her class each day.Voicing a complaint is a waste of time. Nothing gets done, all they do is have the driver document the route and then a monitor rides along. In my case, theyeven added more kids with the monitor onboard! I am so sick
and tired of this and wonder when will someone display common sense
and add another bus to the route. The DOE does not care about special
education students.I am a parent
that intends to see her child be a success and I shall continue to
speak and voice my concerns,because
if you aren't an advocate for your
kids, then who will be?
