Half of the money will be evenly distributed among all council districts to raise awareness of the disease. The other half will go toward programs such as recreational activities, after school and summer programs, and social skills training for autistic children. "We have a crisis, a 72-percent increase in children diagnosed with autism,” said City Councilman Vincent Ignizio. “My niece, Alyssa, was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder, and I saw what immediate intervention and help can do toward mainstreaming these kids." According to the Centers for Disease Control 1 in every 150 babies is born with autism.
