Backyards Not Bonuses - New York Communities for Change

Watch original...

Despite the fact the only a fraction of homeowners who sought help received a permanent mortgage modification from JP Morgan Chase, the bank's CEO, Jamie Dimon, just received a $17 million dollar bonus.
Clearly, Chase is out of touch with the consequences the financial industry's reckless practices continue to have in our communities.

Yesterday, NYC Council Member Jumaane Williams kicked off a campaign by New York Communities for Change in rockstar fashion!

Cheered on by fellow Council Members and dozens of NYCC protesters, Williams stormed JP Morgan Chase’s Park Avenue branch. Protesting the bank's awful record on helping families who are facing foreclosure and haven't received assistance with their mortgages, Williams closed his Chase account.

Can you continue our fight against Chase and pitch in $17? That's just 1/1,000,000 of Jamie Dimon's bonus.

In the coming weeks, many other elected officials, clergy members and unions will follow suit, drawing attention to Chase’s terrible record on modifying mortgages of distressed homeowners in New York.

Council Members Williams, Melissa Mark-Viverito, Mathieu Eugene and James Sanders were the first on the scene, but this is only the beginning.

Just 6 percent of NY homeowners who sought help have received a permanent mortgage modification from JP Morgan Chase - the other 94 percent have been denied or are in limbo.

That’s a shocking number when their CEO just received a $17 million bonus!
Please help us take this campaign to the next level by contributing $17 dollars.

It might seem like a small amount (just 1/1,000,000th of Jamie Dimon’s bonus!), but it will go a long way in helping us make sure that everyone who googles Chase will see the truth about their lending practices.

Bank Overcharged Military Families On Mortgages - Tamara Keith, NPR News, Washington

Read original...

JPMorgan Chase admitted to overcharging more than 4,000 active-duty military personnel on their home loans and said it foreclosed in error on 14 of them. The company will send out $2 million worth of refunds to 4,000 active-duty customers who were affected.
The banking giant JP Morgan Chase has admitted that it overcharged more than 4,000 active duty military personnel on their home loans. As first reported by NBC News, the bank also says it mistakenly foreclosed on the homes of 14 soldiers.

As NPR's Tamara Keith reports, members in the military have special protections, but in this case, they didn't work.

TAMARA KEITH: Julia Rowles and her husband Marine Captain Jonathan Rowles have been fighting with Chase bank for years - basically ever since Captain Rowles was commissioned as an officer in 2006.

Ms. JULIA ROWLES: They would say, we will take your house. We will report you to the credit agency. This is a bad situation that you don't want to be getting into. Pay us today. They were harassing us for money that we did not owe them.

KEITH: Her husband once got a collection call at 3:00 AM. And none of that was supposed to happen. Under a federal law called the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, most troops can get their mortgage interest rates reduced to six percent while on active-duty and foreclosures aren't allowed. Rowles says her husband, who is now overseas, was granted the lower interest rate, but Chase didn't adjust its records.

Ms. ROWLES: They kept still charging us nine and 10 percent and we were paying upwards to $2,000 when we should have only been paying $1,400.

KEITH: This week, Chase said it would be sending out $2 million worth of refunds to 4,000 active-duty customers like the Rowles, who were overcharged. It also admitted wrongfully foreclosing on 14 homes, and said all but one of those cases has been resolved.

Bank officials declined an interview request, but in a statement said quote, while any customer mistake is regrettable, we feel particularly badly about the mistakes we made here.
But attorney Dick Harpootlian in Columbia, South Carolina isn't ready to accept the apology. He's one of the lawyers representing the Rowles family in what he hopes will become a class action lawsuit against Chase.

Mr. DICK HARPOOTLIAN (Civil Attorney): I was a prosecutor for 12 years, everybody that got caught taking money that wasn't theirs always said they were sorry, offered to give it back and call it even and that's just not what ought to happen in cases like this.

Ms. ELIZABETH WARREN (Assistant and Special Advisor to the President): This latest incident is further proof of why we need a strong consumer financial protection agency.

KEITH: That's Elizabeth Warren, a special assistant to President Obama. She's putting together the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. It was created by Congress to look out for consumers in the wake of the financial crisis and will also focus on protecting military families.

Ms. WARREN: We need a cop on the beat. The laws are in place but there's no one to enforce them and no one to speak up for these families, this is just wrong.

KEITH: Warren says the laws exist so service members can concentrate on doing their jobs.

Ms. WARREN: Not be worried about paperwork and bills and whether or not a loved one is being harassed for money that's not even owed.

KEITH: Yesterday, Warren visited Lackland Air Force Base in Texas to talk to military families about their financial concerns. She was joined by Holly Petraeus, the wife of General David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Mrs. Petraeus was one of the first hires for the new consumer bureau.

Ms. HOLLY PETRAEUS (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau): I really can't think of anything better to be doing while my husband is deployed forever than, you know, working on a project like this.

KEITH: She'll head the office of Service Member Affairs - an office that will be on the lookout for issues like those at Chase.

Demand Your Mortgage Note..!!

Wheres the Note.org

The big banks' BS is starting to catch up to them.

Last week, JPMorgan Chase announced they were halting foreclosures in 23 states. Turns out, the bankers in charge of approving the foreclosure paperwork weren't even reading what they were signing. Now, one by one, foreclosures at America's biggest banks are grinding to a halt. It's gotten so bad, several states are taking the banks to court - calling for an immediate freeze on all foreclosures.

The banks created this mess, it's on them to clean it up. You have a right to know if your mortgage is affected.

Wall Street has bought and sold our mortgages so many times, they've lost track of who owns what. And now they're getting caught red handed. In one state, two banks tried to foreclose on the same home. In another state, BofA tried to take a house away from a man who'd never even had a mortgage. The more we learn, the worse it gets.

Banks are calling these "technical glitches." These are more than technical glitches. These are monumental screw-ups that are forcing families out of their homes. The banks raise our rates and change our terms - and if we make one mistake, we pay with our homes.

Don't have a mortgage? Pass this on to someone who does. Every single homeowner needs to know if their bank still holds their mortgage note.

NYS Dems Filing Board Of Elections Complaint V. Rick Lazio: (Updated) by Celeste Katz - The Daily Politics - NY Daily News

Read original...

The state Democratic Party is going after GOP gubernatorial nominee Rick Lazio's relationship with JPMorgan Chase, saying even though the Republican is currently on unpaid leave from his job there, he may still have access to perks -- like the use of corporate jets -- that could count as in-kind contributions.

“Given how fed up people are with Wall Street, Rick Lazio’s decision not to make a clean break from JPMorgan Chase makes no sense unless there’s some substantial financial upside for him,” said NYS Dems ED Charlie King. “There is certainly no political upside for him.”

“We already know Lazio’s decision to maintain an ongoing relationship with JPMorgan Chase doesn’t look good. The real question for the Board of Elections is whether any laws were broken,” added King. “Today, we’re asking the Board of Elections to determine what kind of financial arrangement Lazio has with JPMorgan Chase and whether it runs afoul of campaign finance rules.”

Responded Team Lazio's Barney Keller:

"Charlie King sounds like he's auditioning for a part on the X-Files, because everyday his conspiracy theories are getting more bizarre and out of control. On the other hand, it is a fact that Andrew Cuomo has taken over $7 million from the special interests to protect Albany's special-interest government. That's something he'll have to address with the voters in November."

Update: The Board of Elections declined comment on the complaint.
