NY Post: Term-Limit Pols Mull Challenges...

May 14, 2007 -- As the clock ticks down on the current City Council term, lawmakers are scrambling to the next chapter of their political lives, and in the process are taking aim at other incumbents.

Thirty-four council members are term-limited in 2009, leaving many vying for offices that will be vacant, such as the comptroller, public advocate and borough presidents.

But others are making plans to kick current lawmakers out of office.

In Brooklyn, Councilman Kendall Stewart will mount a challenge to fellow Democrat, state Sen. Kevin Parker.

In Queens, Joe Addabbo, a Democrat, will seek to send Republican state Sen. Serphin Maltese to retirement. Also in Queens, Hiram Monserrate hasn't ruled out mounting another challenge to a fellow Democrat, state Sen. John Sabini.

"The bottom line is I truly believe I could do a better job just keeping up the pace with the change that is going on up in Albany," Addabbo said of his race against Maltese.
