
Residents worried about their homes called 911 at 2:39 p.m. on April 10.
Firefighters arrived within four minutes, but by then the fire, fueled by fierce winds, had already spread the span of four blocks, witnesses said.
Responders ran hoses out into the brush fields to extinguish the blaze, which was upgraded to a second alarm.
The blaze was rendered under control shortly after 4 p.m.
No injuries were reported, said fire officials, who added that the exact cause of the blaze was still being investigated as this paper went to press.
This is the second time in 24 hours that firefighters were called to put out brush fires in the neighborhoods adjacent to Gateway National Park.
On Monday night, fire fighters were called to Avenue U in the East 30s to put out a brush fire sparked near the Salt Marsh Nature Center.
