wcbstv.com - Bono Joins Clinton, Lowey In World Education Push
(CBS/AP) WASHINGTON Two New York lawmakers are getting some high-profile help with a push to expand basic education around the world.
The rock star Bono is joining the effort with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Representative Nita Lowey and Alabama Representative Spencer Bachus.
They're pushing to add $10 billion to a global fund to provide education to millions of children in Africa and elsewhere.
U2's Bono -- a long-time advocate for anti-poverty programs -- said on a conference call Tuesday that although he can't vote for the lawmakers, he's "thankful for what they're doing."
An estimated 77 million children worldwide don't have access to education up to the sixth grade. That number includes 38 million in Africa alone.
