A high-ranking NYPD cop shot himself to death in his Queens office shortly before he was scheduled to go on duty Thursday afternoon, police sources said.
Inspector Anthony Tria, 47, who headed the department's capital construction unit, committed suicide moments before 4 p.m. at his office in Fort Totten, the sources said.
It wasn't immediately clear what drove him to take his life, investigators said.
In a statement issued last night, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly offered condolences to the Dix Hills, L.I, man's family and friends on behalf of the entire force.
He described Tria as a "dedicated 26-year veteran of the NYPD, who a was responsible for every major building project involving the Police Department, including the new police academy, the joint operations center, and the back-up 911 facility, which are all currently underway.
"Inspector Tria was a consummate professional who worked tirelessly on behalf of the Police Department and the people of New York," Kelly said.
