NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Was it murder of self defense? The 46-year-old wife of the fallen retired cop was wheeled from the 106 Precinct house on Monday night complaining of chest pains.

She was crying gently as they loaded her into an ambulance. Barbara Sheehan, CBS 2 HD has been told, repeatedly shot and eventually killed her retired police officer husband, Raymond, capping what some say was a relationship based on domestic abuse.

The incident happened in their Howard Beach home just after midnight Sunday night. Neighbors told CBS 2 HD she'd been in church Sunday bearing the marks of a beating.

"She didn't look good," one person said. "Apparently she had a broken nose from the night before. Somebody broke her nose."

The accused killer apparently spent Monday morning in the home with her husband's body. One neighbor was even trying to applaud as she was taken away in cuffs.

The killing went undiscovered until after daybreak when Barbara's mother and sister stopped by to check on her and saw the body on the floor. Their screams alerted a passing UPS driver who called police.

The Sheehans have two grown children of college age. Although many sensed trouble no one predicted this. Even people who heard the shots early Monday morning didn't imagine they were coming from the Sheehan's home.

"Just sounded like the typical kids with fireworks and M-80s, but there were too many of them and much louder," neighbor Taryn Duffy said. "And the nothing. My father went outside. My neighbors looked outside. Nobody saw anything so we all went back to bed."

"Shocking, very shocking. They are very good people. That's all I know," said another neighbor, who added the couple had lived in the neighborhood for at least 25 years.
