The Council and I take very seriously the deeply troubling allegations against Council Member Dennis Gallagher. Therefore, the matter is being immediately referred to the City Council's Standards and Ethics Committee, which will meet at the beginning of next week.

Statement by Speaker Christine C. Quinn
Re: Council Member Dennis Gallagher
We have received a written communication from Council Member Dennis Gallagher informing us that he will be stepping down from his leadership position and his position on the Budget Negotiating Team. In addition, he has requested that he be temporarily removed from his committee assignments.
Council Member Gallagher has expressed that he does not wish the ongoing criminal proceedings to become a distraction from the important business of the City Council.
We believe this decision to be appropriate, and will be referring his request to the Council's Committee on Rules, Privileges and Elections.
