COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: In January, Community Board (CB) 5 named Steve Fiedler the Chair of its Parks Committee after he served as the second chair of the committee for the previous five years. In addition to serving on CB 5, Fiedler is an executive board member of the Juniper Park Civic Association (JPCA) and a basketball referee in the community. “I want to give back to the neighborhood and keep it nice because we have a real nice place to live here.”

PERSONAL: Fiedler grew up in Ridgewood and currently resides in Middle Village with his wife Anne Marie and two children.

JOB: Fiedler has worked for the United States Postal Service for the past 19 years.

FAVORITE MEMORY: Fiedler said that his proudest moment is anytime that he walks by Juniper Valley Park and sees kids enjoying all of the fields. In addition to serving on CB 5’s Parks Committee, Fiedler volunteers his own time to help keep the park clean and fields in good condition.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Besides acquiring funding for capital improvement projects, Fiedler said that the biggest challenge his community faces is finding places and activities for the youth to participate in. He said the area lacks community and school centers, which could provide an opportunity to get kids involved and keep them out of trouble.

PROUDEST MOMENT: “As a CB member and a civic member, one of the most important things we have done is get the Elmhurst gas tanks site to become a park,” Fiedler said.

INSPIRATION: Fiedler became involved in the community because he did not like the poor condition of Juniper Valley Park. “I went about finding out how to get involved, and it has led me down this path.
