Statement: Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley on Mayor Giving 20 Fire Company Closures Reprieve for Now...

In response to Mayor Bloomberg’s public announcement that he's going "to wait and see" about state funding before moving forward with a list of fire companies closings, City Council Fire & Criminal Justice Chair Elizabeth Crowley said:

“I am hopeful that this is a positive sign but we cannot relax until our fire protection is secured. Our City’s taxpayers have spoken and they want our fire companies to remain open. A massive citywide alliance of elected officials, firefighters, business and religious leaders, teachers, parents, students and residents have mobilized against cuts to our FDNY. We need to keep up the pressure and continue to let Mayor Bloomberg know that we have no room to compromise our safety services.”
