Queens Senator Expects a Boost From McCain by Jonathan P. Hicks - City Room Blog - NYTimes.com

I could be wrong but I think that Obama will win SD-15 with approximately 60% of the vote...If I'm right, this is another example of Serf being out-of-touch with the district...

Read original...

It is one of the most hotly contested races on the ballot for the general election. Nonetheless, State Senator Serphin R. Maltese says that he is encouraged about his re-election prospects on Nov. 4, because he expects to benefit from the presence of John McCain at the top of the Republican ticket.

Mr. Maltese, a Republican who represents a moderate- to conservative-leaning district in Queens, said that his party’s presidential candidate is popular enough in the 15th State Senate District to provide coattails for candidates, like him, who are farther down on the ballot.

“I think that John McCain will run a very competitive race in my district,” Mr. Maltese said in an interview on Tuesday. “I expect he will get perhaps 50 percent of the vote in my district. That means I have more of a shot of getting not just the Republican votes, but the votes of other independent voters in my district.”

Two years ago, Mr. Maltese, who was first elected to the Senate in 1988, was challenged by Albert J. Baldeo, a lawyer who was not particularly well known in the district and who was not backed by the Democratic Party organization in Queens. That year, Mr. Baldeo came within 2 percentage points, about 900 votes, from defeating the longtime senator.

In this year’s race, Mr. Maltese’s Democratic challenger is City Councilman Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. Mr. Addabbo has the enthusiastic support of the Democratic organization in Queens and has a well known family name (his late father was a congressman from the borough). And the party — in Queens and in the state — has made Mr. Addabbo’s campaign a priority.

The district, where registered Democratic voters outpace Republicans, stretches from Howard Beach through Middle Village to Maspeth.

Apart from the help he expects to get from Senator McCain’s presence on the ballot. Mr. Maltese also points to his support from unions this year, saying that they will provide him with needed campaign volunteers. Just last week, he was endorsed by 1199 S.E.I.U., the large healthcare workers union.

“I’m especially pleased with that endorsement because they put their men and women where their mouth is,” Mr. Maltese said. “They have assets and men and women who are willing to come out and campaign door to door.”

But Mr. Addabbo said that he has his own list of unions supporting him and that the Democratic ticket will also draw many voters to his side of the ballot.

“We have a list of unions supporting my campaign, too,” Mr. Addabbo said. “And we’re proud to have so many labor unions with us. But in the end, it’s not who endorses you that counts as much as what the voters themselves do. And we’re out there talking to voters and I think they’ll do the right thing.”

Powell Endorses Obama - The Caucus Blog - NYTimes.com

Read original...

"Former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell endorsed the presidential bid of Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, during an interview Sunday on “Meet the Press.”

The former Army general, who served as Secretary of State during President George W. Bush’s first term said a number of factors contributed to his decision to support Mr. Obama over Senator John McCain, the Republican nominee.

“I think that Senator Obama brings a fresh set of eyes, fresh set of ideas to the table,” Mr. Powell said, speaking outside NBC’s Washington studio. “I think that Senator McCain, as gifted as he is, is essentially going to execute the Republican agenda, the orthodoxy of the Republican agenda with a new face and a maverick approach to it, and he’d be quite good at it, but i think we need more than that.”

Mr. Powell also said the interview that the negativity of the McCain campaign was “over the top” and troubled him."

McCain, Obama, And Leaving No Child Behind : NPR

Read original and listen to show...

One thing both presidential candidates agree on is that the education system — particularly No Child Left Behind — is broken. Andrea Seabrook looks to Florida to learn about the law's realities. She talks with parent Michael Accardi of Boynton Beach and with Richard Ellenburg, an elementary science teacher and Florida's 2008 Teacher of the Year. Their stories highlight the benefits and the problems of No Child Left Behind.

Seabrook then asks the education adviser to Sen. Barack Obama, Linda Darling-Hammond, and the adviser to Sen. John McCain, Lisa Graham Keegan, to explain the candidates' plans for U.S. education.

Letter to the Editor - Tapping Out Wire Taps by David M. Quintana - Queens Ledger

Queens Gazette - Obama Backtracks...

The Wave - Troubling Election Season...

Tapping Out Wire Taps

Dear Editor:

For months all we were told by those in the media was how Senator Obama was a new type of candidate, that he was a non-political politician, that he was above the fray, and that he was running to change politics as we have known it within the Washington beltway. Obama portrays himself as transcending traditional divides

You all must have heard thousands of times how he was a new type of politician. Senator Obama was billed as a reformer cast from the same mold as was Robert F. Kennedy. He was certainly said to be from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

I never bought into this theory, I never saw or heard how his campaign rhetoric really explained how he planned to do anything of substance nor did I hear any semblance of what he had already accomplished, all I heard was flowery vacuous speeches in front of mostly young enthusiastic crowds, ala a rock star.

Now within weeks of virtually securing the Democratic Party nomination, he has thrown the progressive principles he was supposed to stand for out the window.

For starters, he has decided to break his promises to run his campaign outside of the federal campaign finance limitations. Barack Obama s decision not to take public funds for the general election was a total reversal of his previous positions, as the huckster/wizard in “The Wizard of Oz says, “in the vernacular of the peasantry,” it’s nothing short of a flip-flop, a sheer calculation designed for political expediency. Obama’s decision in this matter reflects a Washington “business as usual” attitude toward politics. All of a sudden, Obama, after agreeing for 2 years with the public financing of presidential campaigns, now says that “the system is broken”.

And secondly and most importantly, he has decided to vote in favor of the Bush/Cheney cabal corporate mindset and has chosen to trample upon the US Constitution by supporting the FISA bill which can be summed up as the Telecom Immunity Act.

There is absolutely no need for a new FISA bill, the facts are that the current law allows the President to engage in secret wiretapping, even to the extent of waiting three days after beginning a wiretap to ask permission from a secret court. There is no imminent security threat nor any loophole that demanded additional action, as far as I can ascertain.

To be clear, this act totally eviscerates the Fourth Amendment to our sacred Constitution and allows the telecom industry to operate outside the law and helps the federal government spy on each and everyone of us.

This is in my mind, it is a total capitulation to a lame duck president who is at historic lows in popularity with the American people. Senator Obama has embraced and is pandering to the extreme right wing zealots. It is surely a prime example of him helping to inch our nation closer towards Fascism -- the merged efforts of government and corporations that answer to no government. Senator Obama has chosen to “retroactively immunize corporate criminals,” instead of standing up for our Constitution and the common man .

I can’t say strongly enough how I feel the Senator has cowered to the ultra right wing Republican thugs and I believe these actions display a demonstrated weakness and a monumental lack of strength.

In closing, if Senator Obama cannot show courage now and stand up to those who would harm our basic American freedoms, as our forefathers clearly articulated in the Constitution, how can we trust him to stand up for the American people in this violent and ever stringent world of terrorists and enemies throughout the world.

Sincerely,
David M. Quintana

Obama Moves to the Far Right - Forum South - July 3rd

Also Published July 4th in the Rockaway Wave - Troubling Election Season

Dear Editor:

I am writing to comment on recent troubling developments in the presidential race.

After what was described by many pundits as a interminable race in the democratic primary between Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama, Obama emerged as the presumed candidate of his party.

For the record, I am a strong supporter of Senator Hillary Clinton's candidacy.

For months all we were told by those in the media was how Senator Obama was a new type of candidate, that he was a non-political politician, that he was above the fray, and that he was running to change politics as we have known it within the Washington beltway. Obama portrays himself as transcending traditional divides

Now within weeks of virtually securing the democratic party nomination, he has thrown the progressive principles he was supposed to stand for out the window.

For starters, he has decided to break his promises to run his campaign outside of the federal campaign finance limitations. Foregoing, his prior commitments to run his campaign within the campaign finance laws for which he until recently advocated.

Barack Obama’s decision not to take public funds for the general election was a total reversal of his previous positions, as the huckster/wizard in “The Wizard of Oz” says, “in the vernacular of the peasantry”, it's nothing short of a flip-flop, a sheer calculation designed for political expediency. Obama’s decision here reflects a Washington “business as usual” attitude toward politics. All of a sudden, Obama, after agreeing for 2 years with the public financing of presidential campaigns, he now says that "the system is broken".

As reported in “The Politico” on June 20 - It’s official: Obama will back a filibuster of any Senate FISA legislation containing telecom immunity, his campaign has just told Election Central. The Obama campaign has just sent over the following statement from spokesman Bill Burton:

“To be clear: Barack will support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies.”

Then in a stunning reversal of everything we were told he was against, he supports the very bill he just two weeks before spoke out against.

Lets be clear, this Act totally eviscerates the Fourth Amendment to our sacred Constitution and allows the telecom industry to operate outside the law and helps the federal government spy on each and everyone of us.

This is in my mind, a total capitulation to a lame duck president who is at historic lows in popularity with the American people. Seeing Red for McCain in Queens by Pete Davis - The Queens Courier

Read original...

Since Ronald Reagan won his second presidential term in 1984, New York State has been in the democratic blue column, but some Queens Republicans are hopeful that the state could switch back to republican red this year with John McCain at the top of the ticket.

“We are very excited to have McCain at the top because he has natural appeal to Reagan Democrats, Republicans and Independents,” said Vince Tabone, who is the Executive Vice Chair of the Queens County Republican Party and will also serve as the point man of the Queens effort to elect McCain in November.

The Queens County Republican Party, which originally endorsed former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, quickly switched their support to McCain after Giuliani bowed out of the Republican primary.

During the February primary, McCain took home 51 percent of the Republican vote statewide compared to only 27 percent for runner-up Mitt Romney. McCain’s impressive showing in NY also resonated in Queens with nearly 55 percent of Republican voters selecting McCain compared to 25 percent for Romney.

*
After winning decisively in NY, Tabone said Queens volunteers started making phone calls to voters in other states asking them to vote for McCain and help him clinch the Republican nomination - a tactic that would only intensify as the general election approaches.

Meanwhile, Republican strategists believe that the Democrats selecting Barack Obama over New York State Senator Hillary Clinton may also improve McCain’s chances of being competitive in the state. Clinton garnered 57 percent of the statewide vote during the Super Tuesday primary, but she was even stronger in Queens with 60 percent of Queens Democrats voting for Clinton.

In addition, McCain supporters believe that Clinton’s reluctant exit from the extremely close Democratic nominating dance increases the likelihood that her supporters would be disenfranchised by the entire Democratic Party’s process and switch over to McCain.

“You certainly see him [McCain] in a better position than you could have predicted six months ago because the Democratic primary [competition] has been incredibly divisive,” said Matthew Walter, Director of Communications for the NY Republican State Committee. “The way their primary played out certainly provides fertile ground for John McCain in Queens, NY and all over the country.”

Walter said that while his organization has spent the last few months introducing McCain to the state’s voters, they could now focus on Obama and some of his policies that may not resonate with New York voters.

In addition, Tabone attacked Obama’s voting record as a U.S. Senator, saying his liberal policies would not play well in swing states like Ohio and could leave him more vulnerable in New York.

“He has this wide sweeping rhetoric that suggests that he will be a unifier, but his voting record doesn’t say that at all,” said Tabone, who referenced Obama’s voting record as being to the left of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

US Congressional Representative Nydia Velazquez Supports Hillary Clinton for Vice President to Ensure Party Unity

Representative Nydia Velazquez says Hillary's 20 years of experience complements Obama...That Hispanics connect with Hillary as family and that Hillary would significantly strengthen the national ticket...

Representative Velazquez goes on to talk about Hillary's call to the New York Congressional delegation...Hillary was gracious and thanked them for all the hard work on her behalf and for helping to energize millions of voters...

Nydia says that Hillary won by overwhelming margins in the Hispanic community from the start of the primaries until the end...When asked about Bill Richardson's support among Hispanics she cites how his numbers went down when he endorsed Obama and how Hillary's numbers continued to grow...

Videos from NY Daily News Political blog - Flickr set...

Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) speaks out in support of Hillary Clinton and in celebration of Women's History Month.

I grew up in a very modest home near Puerto Rico's Rio Limon. My family didn't have much, but I had a great role model - my mother. To make ends meet she sold pasteles, a traditional Puerto Rican food, to the workers in the sugar cane fields. It was difficult work considering she was also raising nine children, but she never complained. Because of her tireless efforts, I was able to get a good education and go on to be the first Puerto Rican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Today, I serve the residents of Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan's Lower East Side with the same humility, resolve and unwavering sense of commitment that I learned from my mother. In fact, those qualities define my work as a public official, and they are the lens through which I judge our Presidential candidates.

That is exactly why I support Hillary. She is an experienced leader who is committed to working on our behalf. She has the ability to show every American that there are no constraints strong enough to keep us from achieving our dreams. And, just as importantly, she understands that our history is written in the selfless actions of people like my mother. As we celebrate Women's History Month, we should remember those facts, and use the lessons we have learned to make the best choice in this election.
