NY1: More City Workers Reportedly Earned Big Bucks Last Year...
The New York Post reports the number of city employees making base salaries of at least $150,000 went up 50-percent last year. The Post attributes the information to the city's payroll office, which shows 626 employees earned $150,000 in 2006, up from 416 in 2005. The paper says the increase was led by the DOE, where the number of workers making $150,000 more than doubled in 2006, from 97 to 229. It says Schools Chancellor Joel Klein continues to be the city's best-paid employee, raking in $250,000 a year. A DOE spokesperson says city officials owe the up-tick in salaries to promotions, contractual raises for union employees and a boost in managerial pay from the Bloomberg administration. The higher salaries are the result of a 2006 budget cut of $230 million, which was redirected toward the schools.
