New York's educational system gets mixed reviews, according to national statistics released Thursday.
In general, reading results were positive, while math scores varied from grade to grade. New York ranked third out of 24 states nationwide in eighth-grade reading, and ninth out of 32 states in fourth-grade reading.
In eighth-grade math, the state ranked 13th out of 36 states. Fourth-grade math had the worst showing at 29th out of 33 states.
State Education Commissioner Richard Mills says tests show improvement since standards were raised beginning in 199, but there is room to do better.
New York has revised its math standards since the last national assessment tests in 2005, and officials are planning to revise English standards.
