NY1: Students Learn Spelling, Acting With Help From Broadway Cast...

Watch video...

Students put on a mock spelling bee at the Grace Dodge High School in Belmont Friday.

The bee was part of a grant program and fellowship, where performers from the Broadway show "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" teach students theatre and acting – along with spelling and vocabulary.

"A lot of times I get to teach people who love theatre, who have done theatre their whole lives and, you know, have the money to go pay for great classes and things,” said Broadway performer Jared Gertner. “When you get to things to do things like this it’s more exciting, more fulfilling because these kids don't get the exposure."

The students will see the show's Broadway production for free next week.

They will also meet with the cast for a discussion afterwards.
