Authorities say 10 people have been taken to hospitals after a bus driver swerved to avoid a hitting a child and crashed into a fence in Queens. Firefighters say the injuries don't appear to be life-threatening.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Paul Fleuranges says the child darted in front of the moving bus Sunday evening in the Rockaway Park area. He says the driver veered away from the child, and the bus jumped a curb on Beach Channel Drive around 7:30 p.m.
Fleuranges says the driver is among those hurt.
Police and firefighters say the bus hit an abandoned building, but Fleuranges says it hit only a fence.
