(Glendale - WABC, July 6, 2007) - A train derailed in Queens Friday morning, sendin three cars of a seven-car freight train off the tracks.
Authorities say the incident happened just before 9:30 near Otto Road and 68th Place in the Glendale section, near the Fresh Pond Railyard.
The FDNY says one of the derailed cars is a tanker car carrying 33,000 gallons of propane, but so far there is no indication of any hazardous material leaking from the train. Emergency crews have decided they can re-rail the car without off-loading the propane. However, they are evacuations of three commercial buildings and four blcoks around the derailment. They say the move is purely precautionary.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
A crane is being brought in to re-rail the cars that left the track.
The line is operated by the New York and Atlantic Railroad. Now, THREE commercial buildings and an additional FOUR BLOCKS around the derailment are being evacuated&with residents being relocated to a nearby senior center at 68-52 Fresh Pond Rd.
